Compassionate: The Third of the Seven Cs of Spiritual Coaching

While the landscapes through which we travel are often beautiful and full of wonder, they are also at times painful and even brutal. Compassion is essential, in coaching and in life, because it gently embraces our fellow travellers as they journey through the varied landscapes of life, and it allows us to treat ourselves with that same loving tenderness.

Compassionate coaching works from the principle of understanding and celebrating all of the places we've been, and all of the experiences we've had along the way. Working from this place allows a full acknowledgement of the strength and wisdom gained through these journeys, as well as a gentle acceptance of how difficult and challenging some of those journeys have been.

Yet compassion itself can be challenging. Sometimes we can be impatient with those travelling landscapes through which we've already journeyed. Sometimes we can get overwhelmed by frustration that we aren't journeying fast enough through our own landscapes. Sometimes we can get lost in judging those whose lives or choices are so much different from our own.

In the end, intentionally commiting to the spiritual practice of compassion can move us past those challenging moments, and unlock our fullest engagement with each other, and with the world; the more we immerse ourselves in the practice, the deeper and more fulfilling it becomes.

Practice Tip: This week, immerse yourself in the life of someone very different from yourself. Go to a library or bookstore, and find a biography of someone completely unlike yourself, or rent a movie that focuses on the life of someone with whom you think you have nothing in common.

Then dive into learning all about this person, their life and their choices. You don't have to agree with anything - but challenge yourself to stay open and understand who they were and what motivated them. The more we get to know about 'the other', the less other they become, and the harder it becomes to seperate ourselves completely from their journeys and experiences!

Challenging: The Fourth of the Seven Cs of Spiritual Coaching

Wind To Thy Wings

In each issue I will highlight a resource I think you'll find powerful and uplifting. If you have a suggestion for a book, movie, album or other resource that you have found significant in your journey, and would like to share with others, I would love to hear from you – email your suggestions to adam@dailydivine.com!

Today I offer another resource of my own. Carol McClelland's book The Seasons of Change is a wonderful text that uses natural imagery and metaphor to honour all of the moments of change in our lives. The subtitle, Using Nature's Wisdom to Grow Through Live's Inevitable Ups and Downs, effectively depcits how the book invites all of us to look at the richness to be found in the peaks, valleys, and places in between in the landscapes of our lives. I have found this to be a wonderful resource with which to journey!

If you know of someone who is ready to journey through some seasons of change of their own, and are looking to enrich and support those spiritual journeys, please pass my name along to them! I am in a new stage of growth for my coaching practice, and I appreciate the referrals as much as I welcome the opportunity to work with them!
